First World War Trench Maps

The National Library of Scotland has released interactive maps of 307 trench maps from World War I. The maps not only show the location of First World War trenches but reveal the location of enemy positions and defences.

The maps are available to view in a number of different formats. You can view all the library's historical military maps of trench positions by navigating this Google Map showing where trench maps are available. You can also view the maps overlaid on a modern Google Map. My favorite format however is this side-by-side viewer, which allows you to examine each of the trench maps next to the same view today using Google Maps or Bing Maps satellite imagery.
