London Road Traffic on the Map

Oliver O'Brien from UCL CASA has used data from a Transport for London traffic survey to create a map visualizing the traffic flow on London's key transport corridors.

The London Cycling Census Map allows users to compare traffic flow by vehicle type on London roads at different times of the day. The map reveals some interesting patterns in London's traffic, including which roads are most popular with cyclists.

When crossing the river cyclists tend to avoid Tower Bridge and Southwark Bridge. London Bridge, Blackfriars and Waterloo Bridge are the cyclists preferred routes for crossing the river. When travelling east/west cyclists seem to prefer Old Street - Theobold's Road rather than the many other alternatives.

The map also reveals some interesting patterns in the traffic of other vehicle types. It seems to confirm, for example, that cab drivers in London really don't go south of the river very often.
